Field performance report: ARR 1585-2 in real construction conditions
The ARR 1585-2 trench roller demonstrates strong performance, reliability, and efficiency under real-world construction conditions. Equipped with a Kubota D1105 Stage V engine delivering 15.6 kW and an operating weight of 1,420 kg, the machine is designed to handle a wide range of compaction tasks across various soil types.
Materials tested
During the field test, the ARR 1585-2 was used to compact multiple types of materials, including:
Recycled construction waste, brick fraction 0/63 mm
Recycled construction waste, concrete fraction 0/63 mm
Gravel 16/32
Clayed sand and soil
This variety provided a comprehensive evaluation of the machine’s versatility across both granular and cohesive materials.
Test overview
The testing took place on a construction site during groundwork preparation for a family house. The machine was evaluated in two main phases: construction of an access road and compaction of a former basement excavation.
1. Access road compaction
The first phase involved building a temporary access road to allow heavy construction machinery to reach the site.
Total area: 260 m²
Material: 15–20 cm layer of recycled brick, 0/63 mm
Compaction: 5 passes over the entire surface
Total compaction time: approximately 4.2 hours
After compaction with the trench roller, the surface was leveled using a vibratory plate.
Result
The ARR 1585-2 proved effective in achieving consistent compaction across a relatively large surface area, maintaining surface integrity without material displacement during lane transitions.
2. Former basement compaction
The second phase focused on filling and compacting an excavated basement area to prepare for concrete foundation strip installation.
Excavation cleaned and prepared to required depth
Sequential layering and compaction process applied
30 cm concrete rubble layer, 6 m², compacted with 10 passes
Two layers of gravel, 16/32 mm, each 15 cm thick
Final backfill: five layers of clay and clayey sand, each 20 cm thick
Total passes: approximately 30
Total compaction time: approximately 2.2 hours
Result
The machine handled both coarse and cohesive materials efficiently, delivering stable and uniform compaction even in confined excavation conditions.
Machine performance and handling
The ARR 1585-2 demonstrated several key strengths during operation:
Reliable and safe control, ensuring operator confidence
Skid-steering system allows smooth maneuvering even without damaging the compacted surface
Suitable for larger areas, not only trenches
Effective slope capability, easily exiting excavations
Lateral tilt warning system operates reliably, enhancing safety
Equipped with ACE, Ammann Compaction Expert, system for real-time compaction measurement
Fuel efficiency
Fuel consumption was monitored throughout the test:
Total operation time: 6.9 machine hours, mth
Fuel consumption: approximately 24 liters
Average consumption: 3.5 l/mth
Fuel tank capacity: 22 liters
Continuous operation without refueling: approximately 6 hours
